This report analyses in what form is money held by residents of cities in India. There is no publicly available database that records this. LEAP delves into bank deposits recorded at a city’s bank branches and mutual fund assets attributed to its residents. Read together they give a measure of scale and a measure of composition.
While cities in some states such as Maharashtra or Gujarat hold more in funds Kerala and Tamil Nadu sit at the other end. Understanding India’s emerging cities requires asking how much financial savings are observed in a city, and what are those observed financial assets composed of.
Our analysis covers deposits in 233 Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities and the deposit-to-fund comparison for the 64 cities where relative fund intensity can be established.
