Introducing AQUI: A DIY Air Quality Monitor

Team LEAP
LEAP INSIGHTS FOUNDATION October 2025

This Diwali, let’s gift awareness, not just lights. The air around us often carries invisible risks — smoke, dust, and pollution that affect our health in subtle but significant ways.

To address this, Ayush Patnaik has developed AQUI, a frugal, open-source, do-it-yourself air quality monitor. AQUI allows anyone to measure PM2.5 and PM10 levels in their immediate environment using just an Android phone. There’s no need for a lab, complicated setup, or expensive equipment — just plug in the SDS011 sensor via USB and instantly see the quality of the air you breathe.

The device is designed for easy, intermittent use, making real-time, hyperlocal air quality data accessible to individuals and families. By providing immediate feedback about the environment, AQUI empowers people to make informed health decisions and raises awareness about the invisible risks in everyday air.

All design files, code, and instructions are freely available, allowing anyone to build or customize their own AQUI monitor.

This Diwali, let’s celebrate not just with lights and festivities, but with awareness and care for the air we breathe. Gift awareness. Gift AQUI.
